The first-ever Women’s Premier League in Sierra Leone under the twenty-one months leadership of the SLFA President Thomas Daddy Brima and Board Chairperson Asmaa James will reach its peak today Friday, 31st March 2023 when the final matches will be played in six venues across the country.
A total of twelve female teams from the five regions participated in the 2022/23 league season, while the Rutile-based club Mogbwemo Queens and Kahunla Queens in Kenema are battling for the maiden title, however, Mogbwemo sits at the summit with 52 points and three above Kahunla Queens with 49 points in twenty-one outings.
Both the two title contenders will end the season at home, Mogbwemo Queens FC will play host to seventh-placed side Correctional Service FC, and Kahunla Queens FC welcomes Ram Kay FC in a South-East Derby.
Sierra Leone Police FC which occupies the third position will travel to Makeni and faces off against Mena Queens, Malema Queens sets to entertain bottom-side VEM Buck FC in Kailahun.
The impressive FC Kallon Female side will journey to Kambia to lock horns with Patricia Umu FC, and Albitaya Queens FC clash with Koya Queens at Kabala field, again the Women’s Premier League Board has reaffirmed that all matches must commence at 4:15 pm.
Also, in the ongoing league season, Kahunla Queens’ Kumba Zainab Brima with 25 goals becomes the first to achieve this landmark in the history of top-flight leagues in Sierra Leone including both the male and female categories and has also registered over twelve assists.
However, during a meeting held with representatives of the twelve teams before the commencement of the second round, Asmaa James Chairperson of the Women’s Premier League Board disclosed that the star prize of One Thousand Hundred Thousand Leones (NLe 100,000) for the winners and Fifty Thousand Leones (NLe 50,000) for the runner-up, while the trophy and medals were donated by the ex-Leone Stars player and East End Lions Director of Grassroots football Didi Abu based in the United States of America.
