FIFA has officially lifted financial sanctions against the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), ending a restrictive period that had long hindered the nation’s football operations.
The announcement was confirmed by SLFA Acting Secretary General Mohamed Benson Bawoh, who stated that as of Monday, 19 January 2026, FIFA has removed all financial sanctions previously imposed on the association.
The decision marks a significant turning point for football administration in Sierra Leone, enabling the SLFA to regain full access to its financial operations and international football development support.
According to the SLFA, the lifting of the ban is expected to positively impact domestic competitions, national teams’ preparations, and long-term football development programmes across the country.
“The removal of these sanctions is more than just a procedural update; it’s a total ‘reset’ for the sport in Sierra Leone,” said Bawoh.

The SLFA is now positioned to invest in long-term programs that were previously stalled due to the ban, offering renewed hope for the growth and professionalization of football nationwide.
