The Fourah Bay Community Football Team has condemned the violent actions of Bambara Town supporters during a recent Central One Football Association (COFA) League match.
The incident, which saw fans inflict harm on bystanders, assault the referee, and destroy property, has been described as a serious breach of sportsmanship.
The Fourah Bay team revealed that they had prior knowledge of potential unrest, having received credible reports of Bambara Town supporters planning to incite violence. In response, the club took preventative steps, including notifying the police. However, despite these efforts, the threats materialized, leading to chaos and damage.
“This kind of barbaric behavior has no place in football or our community,” the club said in a statement. “It undermines the integrity of the game and threatens the safety of players, officials, and fans.”
Fourah Bay has called on the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLAFA), the Western Area Football Association (WAFA), and COFA to take immediate action against Bambara Town and those responsible for the violence.
In addition, the team has urged the Sierra Leone Police to conduct a thorough investigation and hold the perpetrators accountable. The club reiterated its commitment to upholding the principles of fair play and working with authorities to prevent future incidents of violence.
Fourah Bay also appealed to its supporters to remain calm and allow governing bodies to address the situation according to established rules. The team thanked its fans for their patience and resilience and emphasized that football should unite, not divide, communities.
Mohamed Bangura, on behalf of the Fourah Bay Community Football Team, signed the statement, calling for justice and peace in the sport.
