Erling Haaland scored twice in the final 12 minutes as Norway stunned five-time champions Brazil 2-1 to reach their first-ever World Cup quarter-final.
The Manchester City striker broke the deadlock with a powerful header in the 79th minute and added a second in the 90th minute, taking his tournament tally to seven goals. Neymar pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 10th minute of stoppage time, but it was too late for the Selecao.
Norway maintained their remarkable unbeaten record against Brazil, with three wins and two draws in five meetings. The victory secures Norway’s first-ever appearance in a World Cup quarter-final, where they will face either Mexico or England in Miami on 11 July.
For Brazil, this is their earliest World Cup exit since 1990, when they were eliminated in the last 16 by Argentina.
Norway had an early goal ruled out for offside in the opening minutes after Alexander Sørloth was adjudged to have strayed. Brazil then had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 14th minute when Matheus Cunha was fouled in the penalty area by Kristoffer Ajer, and the referee awarded a penalty after consulting VAR. Bruno Guimarães stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved by the outstretched leg of goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.
Norway dominated possession in the first half, controlling over 60% of the ball, but Brazil looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Vinícius Júnior forced a fine save from Nyland with his leg in the 41st minute after Martin Ødegaard lost possession in his own box. Casemiro also tested Nyland from range, but the Norwegian keeper was equal to the effort. The first half ended goalless, with Brazil having created the better chances but unable to beat Nyland .
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti brought on Neymar and Endrick in the second half to boost his attack. Endrick nearly broke the deadlock, but Nyland made another crucial save. Just as Brazil looked to seize control, Norway struck.
In the 79th minute, substitute Andreas Schjelderup delivered a precise cross from the left wing, and Haaland rose above Gabriel Magalhães to power a header past Alisson. The towering striker bullied his way through the Brazilian defence to score his sixth goal of the tournament.
Brazil pushed forward in search of an equaliser, leaving gaps at the back. In the 90th minute, Schjelderup turned provider again, sliding a perfect pass to Haaland. The 25-year-old drilled a low left-footed shot through the legs of Danilo and past Alisson to make it 2-0 .
In the 10th minute of added time, Brazil were awarded a penalty after Leo Østigård fouled Casemiro in the box. Neymar stepped up and converted to reduce the deficit to 2-1. But there was not enough time left for Brazil to force a comeback.
