Sierra Leone’s veteran striker, Kei Kamara, has left the Leone Stars camp just days before their decisive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Zambia.
Kamara’s departure, confirmed on Sunday evening, comes after his Major League Soccer (MLS) club requested his return to prepare for an important playoff match in the United States.
Having recently rejoined the national team setup, Kamara’s presence was expected to boost the squad’s morale and attacking options for the must-win clash against Zambia on Tuesday.
However, his sudden exit has left Sierra Leone’s head coach, players, and fans adjusting to the news.
Kamara is one of Sierra Leone’s most capped players and a key figure in the team, known for his leadership and experience on and off the pitch.
While his absence is a significant blow, the team will now have to rely on other forwards to step up in his stead.
Leone Stars are under pressure to secure a positive result against Zambia, as their chances of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON have already vanished following a 1-1 draw against Chad last week. Fans are hoping for a consolation win against a more formidable Zambian side.
