Chelsea Football Club has appointed Liam Rosenior as its new head coach, making the 41-year-old the first manager of Sierra Leonean descent to lead a Premier League club.
The club announced the signing on Tuesday, with Rosenior agreeing to a contract that runs through 2032. He arrives from French Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg, where he secured European qualification in his first season, ending a 19-year drought for the club.
“I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed Head Coach of Chelsea Football Club,” Rosenior said in a statement. “This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies. My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play.”
Rosenior, the son of former Sierra Leone international striker and briefly national team coach Leroy Rosenior, represented England at the under-21 level as a player. His appointment marks a historic moment in English football, breaking a barrier at the top level of the domestic game.
His father, Leroy, switched allegiance to play for Sierra Leone in 1994 and later managed the Leone Stars in a 2007 friendly.
The new Chelsea boss emphasized a philosophy rooted in “teamwork, unity, togetherness and working for one another,” pledging to build strong connections within a talented squad and create an environment driven by success.
Chelsea’s leadership expressed confidence in Rosenior’s ability to develop players while meeting the club’s high ambitions. “Liam has shown that he can build teams with a clear way of playing while setting the highest standards with players on and off the pitch,” the club stated.
Rosenior takes over following the departure of Enzo Maresca earlier this month. He previously managed in England with Hull City and Derby County before his successful stint in France with Strasbourg, which is owned by BlueCo—the same consortium that controls Chelsea.
His appointment is seen as both a sporting decision and a symbolic milestone, highlighting the growing diversity in football leadership. Rosenior is expected to take charge immediately as Chelsea prepares for its next Premier League fixture.
