Morocco now stands alone as the only team from Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final stage.
This follows Egypt’s painful exit at the hands of Argentina in the Round of 16 on Tuesday. The Pharaohs threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 against the defending champions in Atlanta. Egypt had led through goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico, but Argentina completed a stunning comeback with Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez all scoring in the final 13 minutes.
The outcome means Egypt exits the World Cup, leaving Morocco as Africa’s sole representative in the competition.
THE RECORD-BREAKING START
Ten African teams – Tunisia, DR Congo, South Africa, Ghana, Cape Verde, Senegal, Algeria, Ivory Coast, Egypt and Morocco – represented the continent at this year’s expanded 48-team World Cup.
It was a historic continental milestone. Nine of Africa’s 10 representatives advanced to the knockout stage, with Tunisia the only team from the continent to exit after the group stage. Morocco, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Cape Verde, Senegal, Ghana, Algeria and DR Congo all secured places in the Round of 32.
This marked the first time in World Cup history that a confederation had seen 90 per cent of its participating teams advance to the knockout rounds.
MOROCCO’S HISTORIC RUN
Morocco has been the standout performer from the continent. The Atlas Lions became the first African team to reach the World Cup quarter-finals in back-to-back tournaments.
They reached the last eight with a commanding 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada in Houston. Azzedine Ounahi scored twice before substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a late third goal as Morocco proved too strong after surviving Canada’s bright start.
“We are no longer a surprise,” coach Mohamed Ouahbi said. “Now, when people talk about Morocco, we’re a major contender, and it’s a great source of pride. I think it’s only the beginning, and I hope we continue to have runs like this“.
Morocco, seventh in the FIFA rankings entering the tournament, earlier dispatched the Netherlands in a penalty shootout to reach the round-of-16 match with Canada.
The Atlas Lions are now just three wins away from becoming the first African nation to lift the World Cup. They will face France in the quarter-finals on Thursday in Boston.
SIERRA LOADED INSIGHT
The numbers tell a story of both triumph and heartbreak. Nine African teams in the Round of 32 was unprecedented. But eight are already gone.
South Africa’s fairytale ended in stoppage time against Canada. Ivory Coast’s defensive resilience was broken by Erling Haaland. DR Congo’s historic campaign ended against England. Senegal’s comeback was undone by Belgium’s late heroics. Algeria could not break down Switzerland. Cape Verde pushed Argentina to extra time but fell short. Ghana lost to Colombia. Egypt’s historic victory over Australia was followed by a stunning collapse against Argentina.
Now, Morocco carries the weight of a continent’s expectations.
The Atlas Lions have the belief, the momentum, and the defensive resilience to cause an upset against France on Thursday. They have already beaten Spain and Portugal in the 2022 tournament before losing to France in the semi-finals. Now they have a chance for revenge.
A Morocco victory would make them the first African nation to reach a World Cup final. The continent will be watching.
