Diamond Stars Football Club of Kono district is one of the leading football clubs in the Sierra Leone Premier League.

The team is in serious financial difficulty due to a lack of support from its major sponsor, Pavi Fort Construction Company.

On 18th October 2022, officials and stakeholders of Diamond Stars Football Club officially handed over the club to Pavi Fort Construction Company as a new management team to take over the affairs of the club.

During the well-attended handing-over ceremony, the CEO of Pavi Fort Construction Company, Mr Alimu Barrie promised to give the club Le1 Billion (Old Leones) to take care of the club’ pressing needs. But that pledge is yet to be delivered.

According to reliable sources, since Pavi Fort Construction Company took over the management of Diamond Stars nothing substantial has been done to prepare the team for the upcoming premier league.

The players are presently going through hell as they are not even receiving their monthly allowances, no feeding and transportation allowance.

The players have had to walk on foot from their residence (resettlement) to the Koidu Community Centre football field for training daily because the current management could not maintain the bus donated to the club by a business tycoon, Mr Abdulai Sidibay who was the former Chairman of the club. Sidebar continues to be missed by Diamond Stars for his financial support.

Meanwhile, on the 1st December 2022, the Minister of Sports Ibrahim Nyelenkeh displayed a pay-in-slip of Le 2,461,300 (New) as part payment deposited into the Sierra Leone Premier League (SLPL) Board account, out of the Le 3,212,000 (New) approved as government support towards the 2022/23 league season.

All efforts to contact Pavi Fort officials both in Freetown and Kono proved futile.
It would be recalled that Diamond Stars FC have won several major national trophies over the years.

They have represented Sierra Leone on the African continent twice, both at the defunct African Cup Winners Cup and CAF Cup.
They went as far as the quarter-final stage in the CAF Cup in 1994 when they were a displaced team based in Freetown during the eleven years bloody civil war in Sierra Leone.

They eliminated Kamsar of Guinea, Cape Verde’s Boavista and lost to a Cameroonian side but won a protest that took them to the last eight.

They however withdrew from the competition due to a lack of funds.
In 1990, Diamond Stars FC made their début in continental club football competing in the African Cup Winners Cup but was knocked out by Bendel Insurance of Nigeria.
