Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has publicly commended the Sierra Leone Judo Association (SLJA) for its significant efforts in expanding the sport to marginalized communities across the nation.

Speaking after a meeting with the SLJA leadership, led by President Mr. Massaquoi, Dr. Sengeh highlighted the association’s dedication and achievements despite receiving minimal government support.

“Why am I so passionate about this Judo Association?” Dr. Sengeh stated. “With minimal support from the government, they’ve been able to mobilize support and expand their sports to previously marginalized groups.”

The Chief Minister expressed his enthusiasm in meeting with the SLJA President and announced that the association is set to inaugurate its first International Judo Academy next week. This event is anticipated to be a landmark moment in Sierra Leone’s sporting history.

The International Judo Federation (IJF) is reportedly supporting the SLJA’s efforts, aiming to promote the widespread adoption of judo throughout the country and ensure equal opportunities for all citizens.

Dr. Sengeh lauded the SLJA’s remarkable achievements in the face of inadequate government backing. The association has previously represented Sierra Leone at prestigious international competitions, including the Olympic Games and the World Judo Championships. Their growing international recognition has not only brought global attention to the nation but has also underscored the potential of sports as a tool for national development and social change.

Notably, last year the SLJA established the Blind Judo Federation, an initiative launched by Chief Minister Sengeh himself. This program focuses on providing judo training to women, girls, and individuals with disabilities. This strategic move aligns with the association’s broader vision of fostering a radically egalitarian environment within Sierra Leone’s sporting landscape.
