The Chief Minister of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, has urged the Chinese contractors to expedite the rehabilitation project of the National Stadium.

Dr. David Moinina Sengeh made this statement in a brief meeting involving officials of the Ministry of Sports, NSA, the Chinese Ambassador, officials of the stadium construction company, and the press immediately after conducting a tour at the stadium on Tuesday, 27th May 2025.

The objective of the Chief’s visit was to see the level of work done so far and get first-hand information on the project.

“I wish to commend the Sports Ministry and the NSA for their collaborative efforts in ensuring that the rehabilitation project is ongoing despite delays in the project. Together with the MOS and NSA, we will work on modalities to ensure that some of the completed facilities are handed over to the government for public utilization.

“Whilst the contractors are doing a good job, I urged them, on behalf of the government, to expedite the work,” Dr. Sengeh summarized.

During the tour, Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai updated the Chief Minister about NSA’s countless strides and engagements with the contractors to ensure that their demands, such as electricity and water supplies, among others, at the stadium are available.

“NSA has engaged the contractors on several occasions on the project’s timeline, but they have always mentioned challenges as the reason for the delay,” Dr. Abdulai said.

Speaking after the tour, Madam Augusta James-Teima thanked the Chief Minister for joining the MOS and NSA in conducting the tour.

“The government is spending a huge amount of money on hosting home matches outside the country. It is difficult to play home matches away, and the challenges are huge,” the Minister said.

The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone thanked the government for the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

“We want to present a new stadium to Sierra Leone. We have to take our time to do something decent,” he said.
