Scrabble as a word game has been among the most favoured games in the world. This games battles for popularity with off course famous chess board games. Sierra Leone among other African countries has been competing for who brings the title home.
As the 2022 Africa Scrabble Championship is ongoing and team Nigeria sustains Control as Nwali Leads the Pack on day 2 yesterday 23rd October 2022, it has been officially unveiled that Sierra Leone has been awarded the right to host the 2024 Africa Scrabble Championship.
Last month September, the Sierra Leone Scrabble Association invited 17 players across Sierra Leone for intensive training ahead of the Championship this month. The 17 participants were given trials in the first week to choose among them the team that will represent the country.
On an Interview with Awoko Newspaper speaking to the President of the Sierra Leone Scrabble Association, Christian Asgil, he affirmed that those who had make it to the championship is a merit for them. The competition is ongoing starting 21st – 24th October hosted in Zambia this year.
For the love of Scrabble and it’s performance over the years as a state, the country has been awarded the right to hosted the next Scrabble Championship after two years in 2024. Sierra Leone would become the third country in West Africa to host this event, beating stiff competition from Gambia.
Scrabble is a word game in which two to four players score points by placing tiles, each bearing a single letter, onto a game board divided into a 15×15 grid of squares. The tiles must form words that, in crossword fashion, read left to right in rows or downward in columns and are included in a standard dictionary or lexicon.
