The Sierra Leone Premier League is set to significantly boost the local economy, employing over 1,000 individuals across the country during the 2024-2025 season, according to Mohamed Benson Bawoh, Acting Secretary-General of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA).

Speaking at a press conference, Bawoh highlighted the league’s far-reaching economic impact, noting that employment opportunities would span multiple roles. “During this year’s Sierra Leone Premier League, more than 1,000 people will be employed across different sectors. This includes players, officials, support staff, and vendors, all of whom will contribute to the league’s success and sustainability,” he said.

Each of the 18 Premier League clubs will employ 40 players, who will receive regular salaries throughout the season. Match officials, including referees, commissioners, and assessors, will also be remunerated, ensuring the smooth operation of matches.

Additionally, local vendors are set to benefit from increased opportunities at match venues nationwide, selling tickets, food, and other goods. “Those selling tickets and other goods at the matches will earn income, and this creates a ripple effect, benefiting communities across Sierra Leone. This highlights the importance of government and corporate support for the league,” Bawoh added.

This year’s league promises to be highly competitive, with all 18 teams vying for the title. “The level of competition has never been higher. Every team is determined to win, making this season one of the most challenging in recent memory,” Bawoh remarked.

In a significant milestone, the Premier League will operate without direct financial support from the SLFA for the first time. Bawoh praised the Premier League Board for achieving this feat, calling it a testament to the league’s growing maturity and self-sufficiency.

“This is a great development for Sierra Leonean football,” he said, emphasizing the league’s evolution and its potential as a sustainable entity.

As the 2024-2025 season approaches, the SLFA’s focus on job creation and economic impact underscores the growing role of sports as a driver of national development.
