Hazel Alamy will be Sierra Leone’s sole representative at the 2024 World Aquatic Championships in Budapest, Hungary, as the nation grapples with a lack of government funding for sports.

The championships, which begin on December 10, will see Alamy compete in the 50-meter freestyle and 50-meter butterfly events.

The Sierra Leone Aquatic Federation (SLAF) made multiple unsuccessful appeals for sponsorship, including to the National Sports Authority (NSA).

Faced with the risk of losing the country’s standing within the global and African aquatic federations, Alhaji Umaru Bah, Team Manager of the Leone Stars football team, stepped in to provide financial support. His intervention ensured Alamy’s participation and avoided the potential suspension of Sierra Leone’s membership in international aquatic organizations.

Alamy, who resides in London, will carry the nation’s hopes on the world stage despite the challenges. Her presence underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to maintaining a foothold in global aquatic sports, even amid financial hurdles.

The World Aquatic Championships serve as a critical platform for athletes and federations worldwide, offering exposure, development opportunities, and a chance to compete at the highest level. Alamy’s participation is not only a personal achievement but also a lifeline for Sierra Leone’s aquatic sports community.

The SLAF’s struggle highlights broader concerns over sports funding in Sierra Leone, with officials urging for greater governmental and private sector support to ensure sustained participation in future international events.
