Sierra Leone’s Under-17 wrestling team has made a strong impression on the regional stage after securing five medals at the 2026 West African Wrestling Championship held in Guinea-Bissau.
The competition, which doubles as a qualifying pathway for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics, brought together young wrestlers from across the region. Activities began with a preparatory training camp from April 6 to 10, before the main tournament took place from April 11 to 12.
Leading Sierra Leone’s medal haul was Alimamy Kamara, who delivered a standout performance by winning two gold medals in the 60kg category, dominating both freestyle and beach wrestling events. Fatmata Bah also made a significant contribution, earning two silver medals in the 65kg division, while Neneh Isata Shaw added a bronze medal in the women’s 61kg freestyle category.
The team’s overall performance has been described by officials as a major breakthrough, highlighting the growing strength and potential of youth wrestling in Sierra Leone and signaling the country’s readiness to compete at higher international levels.
Following their return, the team was presented to the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone, where Secretary General Ahmed Khanou commended the athletes for their achievements. He reiterated the Committee’s commitment to youth development, urging the young wrestlers to remain disciplined and focused as they pursue greater opportunities on the global stage.
Khanou further described the success as a stepping stone toward future international competitions, noting that continued support through initiatives such as Olympic Solidarity would be key to sustaining the athletes’ progress.
