As the world marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Communication, Technology, and Innovation has reaffirmed her commitment to advancing women’s participation in science and technology.

In a statement celebrating the contributions of women and girls in STEM, the Minister emphasized the need for greater female representation in the field.

“Women and girls are solving real problems in science, technology, and innovation every day, from improving healthcare to building tech solutions that change lives,” she stated.

She highlighted the growing involvement of young women in STEM across Sierra Leone, demonstrating that science is inclusive and accessible to all. However, she urged for more participation, innovative ideas, and bold solutions from women to drive progress.

“But we need more of you. More ideas. More bold solutions. More women leading the way,” she emphasized.

Reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to fostering an inclusive tech landscape, the Minister pointed to initiatives designed to empower women and girls in STEM. She specifically encouraged participation in the Big Five Innovation Investment Challenge, an initiative under the Sierra Leone Digital Transformation Project.

“That’s why the Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Innovation, along with the Sierra Leone Digital Transformation Project, is encouraging more women and girls in STEM to apply for the Big Five Innovation Investment Challenge,” she announced.

The challenge calls on aspiring innovators with transformative ideas aligned with the Big Five Game Changers—Feed Salone, Human Capital Development, Youth Employment, Technology & Infrastructure, and Transforming Public Service. Winners will be revealed at the 2025 Digital Government Conference in May.

Encouraging women and girls to seize this opportunity, she stressed: “Your ideas matter. Your voice matters. Keep breaking barriers, keep creating, and keep inspiring!”

In conclusion, the Minister underscored the significance of this day in celebrating the contributions of women and girls in STEM, highlighting their innovation, resilience, and impact in shaping the future
