The National Communications Authority (NatCA) has officially announced that STARLINK, the global satellite internet provider, is now licensed to operate in Sierra Leone.

However, the authority has raised concerns about unauthorized installations of STARLINK equipment by individuals and businesses across the country.

In a public notice issued by NatCA, the agency emphasized that all STARLINK resellers, retailers, and installers are required to obtain the appropriate licenses to operate legally in Sierra Leone.

The notice further clarifies that the sale and installation of STARLINK equipment without proper authorization is in violation of NatCA regulations, and steps must be taken to regularize these activities.

NatCA outlined the definitions for key roles involved in the distribution and installation of STARLINK equipment:

Resellers: Individuals or establishments selling STARLINK services, including user terminals and related services.

Retailers: Those selling STARLINK user terminals within Sierra Leone.

Installers: Persons or establishments providing installation services for STARLINK user terminals.

The notice also made it clear that currently, no authorized STARLINK resellers or retailers exist in Sierra Leone. NatCA has initiated discussions with STARLINK to license credible resellers and retailers to ensure compliance with the country’s communication regulations.

As STARLINK expands its presence in Sierra Leone, NatCA is urging all businesses and individuals involved in selling or installing STARLINK equipment to regularize their operations with the authority to avoid penalties and ensure proper service delivery.

The public is encouraged to stay informed and ensure they are dealing with licensed service providers as STARLINK services become more accessible throughout the country.
