Sierra Leone national team Coach and FC Kallon owner, Mohamed Kallon is facing accusations of using the Sierra Leone Police to suppress press freedom after journalist Hassan “Youngest” was arrested over an investigative report.
Hassan’s arrest followed his publication of an article detailing Kallon’s increasing involvement in football and political affairs, including his association with the Third Force, a pressure group accused of operating outside official football structures to challenge the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA).
The journalist’s report highlighted key actions by Kallon, such as FC Kallon’s April 4, 2025, press release announcing their withdrawal from the Sierra Leone Premier League and his endorsement of a petition sent to FIFA by the Retired Heroes group, which has led to disputes with the recognized Heroes Executive.
The petition accused the Sierra Leone government of interfering in football affairs—a claim that, if upheld by FIFA, could have triggered sanctions against the country. Football stakeholders have expressed concern over Kallon’s role in actions that could jeopardize Sierra Leone’s standing in international football, despite his public declarations of support for the sport and the nation.
The arrest has intensified fears over shrinking press freedom and the politicization of football in Sierra Leone, where journalists increasingly face retaliation for reporting on influential figures.
