Renowned consumer rights advocate Edmond Abu has voiced the growing frustration of Sierra Leoneans, calling out government inaction as transport fares remain high despite a significant drop in fuel prices.

Speaking passionately, Abu highlighted that while the price of fuel has dropped from Le 30 to Le 24 per liter a 20% reduction transportation costs across the country remain untouched. He noted this inconsistency is deeply unfair to the public, who are already grappling with economic hardships.

“For the first time in Africa, fuel prices have gone down not because of the government, but because of our advocacy. Yet the cost of transportation is still the same,” he said, directing strong words at the Minister of Transport and President Julius Maada Bio, urging them to step in and act.

Abu emphasized that Kekes, Okadas, ferries, and poda-podas should all reduce their fares by 20%, in line with the fuel price cut. He accused the Ministry of Transportation of “depriving the people,” noting that even though the ministry wasn’t responsible for the drop in fuel price, it has a duty to ensure the public feels the benefit.

He concluded by displaying a suggested new fare structure that reflects the 20% fuel price reduction, insisting that the people of Sierra Leone deserve fairness and immediate relief.
