There was panic and confusion at Tombo Junction in Waterloo today after an electricity pole belonging to the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) suddenly collapsed while power was still running through it.
According to people in the area, the pole fell without warning while electricity was still active. The live wires made contact with the ground during the fall, causing fear among those nearby. The collapse caused chaos in the busy area as people nearby, including those walking past and those selling along the roadside, rushed to get out of the way. Several people who were close to the pole when it fell were caught in the incident and injured. They were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital by people around the scene who acted fast to help.

The incident has raised fresh concerns among residents about the current state of EDSA’s infrastructure. People living and working in Waterloo and other parts of Freetown have long expressed concerns over the condition of electric poles, some of which are old, worn out, or visibly leaning. Many believe that today’s event could have turned deadly, especially in such a heavily used area like Tombo Junction.
Some residents are now calling for action from EDSA. Suggestions include replacing old poles with iron ones in high-risk areas and carrying out regular inspections, particularly in places where large numbers of people pass daily.
Investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing.
