The All People’s Congress’s (APC) Deputy Leader in Parliament, Aaron Aruna Koroma, has strongly criticized the supplementary budget recently presented in Parliament by Finance Minister Sheku Fantamadi Bangura.
Koroma raised alarms over the significant increase in the allocation for the Chief Minister’s Office, currently headed by David Moininia Sengeh, which jumped from 21 million to 35 million leones.
During a parliamentary session on July 29, Koroma demanded an explanation for the substantial expenditure hike, questioning whether the additional funds would be directed toward critical infrastructure projects, such as school construction.
He emphasized that if the economy were genuinely improving, the benefits should be felt by ordinary citizens, particularly through enhanced wages. “The price of a cup of rice remains high at 5 leones,” he noted, asserting the economic struggles faced by many.
Koroma further criticized the supplementary budget for neglecting the agricultural sector, warning that this oversight could adversely affect other vital areas, including education. He pointed out that several Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) had yet to receive any approved funding from Parliament.
In response to Koroma’s assertions, Leader of Government Business Hon. Sahr Mathew Nyuma urged him to substantiate his claims with specific evidence rather than making broad allegations. Nyuma defended the government’s financial management, highlighting a reduction in inflation to 7.1%, a marked improvement from the higher rates seen under previous administrations.
Speaker of Parliament Hon. Sengepoh Solomon Thomas advised Finance Minister Bangura to provide a thorough response to the opposition’s concerns. Supporting the government’s position, Hon. Mustapha Musa Sellu attributed the decrease in inflation to disciplined fiscal policies.
Minister Bangura explained that the increase in the Chief Minister’s Office budget was related to the ongoing Constitutional Review process. He assured Parliament that he would consider the feedback from the opposition and address their concerns in the upcoming budget cycle.
