The Acting President of the Sierra Leone Badminton Association (SLBA), Yusufu A. Koroma, has outlined new plans aimed at expanding the sport’s reach across Sierra Leone.
In an interview with Awoko Newspaper, Mr. Koroma described badminton as a highly inclusive sport, saying it is suitable for participants of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. He noted that the SLBA is actively working to increase accessibility and participation through various traditional and innovative initiatives.
“The unique qualities of badminton make it accessible and enjoyable for everyone.” He stated.
Central to this effort is the introduction of the Racket Pack Programme, a school-based initiative specifically designed to introduce badminton to primary school pupils between the ages of 5 and 11. According to the SLBA, the programme provides a safe, engaging, and educational platform for children to learn the basics of badminton, including fundamental techniques, rules, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Mr. Koroma stated that the association intends to take the initiative to schools across the country, with the aim of increasing awareness and involvement in badminton among young Sierra Leoneans. The broader goal of the grassroots campaign is to promote physical fitness, nurture emerging talent, and build a sustainable foundation for the future success of badminton at both national and international levels.
By integrating badminton into early childhood physical education, the SLBA hopes to develop a stronger sporting culture while identifying and supporting potential future champions.
