The All-People’s Congress (APC) has expressed willingness to work closely with President Julius Maada Bio and his Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) government in fostering national unity, peace, and development.

Speaking at Liberty Online TV, APC Publicity Secretary Sidi Yaya Tunis emphasized that the party has always been open to collaboration, noting that recent developments including the release of detained APC members under the Unity Agreement reflect President Bio’s commitment to reconciliation.

“The people who were released from jail through the unity agreement is not because the president wants something else; he clearly wants unity, peace and development for Sierra Leone,” Tunis said. He clarified that only one case differed APC’s Sheriff, who was found with an unlicensed firearm, required a presidential pardon, which was granted by President Bio.

Tunis stressed that meaningful development requires collective effort. “The SLPP government has realized that one man can’t develop a country. We need to work together to do it. That is what President Bio is now actively working to bring, and we are ready to work with them to see Sierra Leone move forward,” he stated.

Addressing the implementation of the Proportional Representation (PR) system, Tunis advocated for a fairer distribution of power within government structures. He suggested that the opposition should receive 40 percent representation instead of 30 percent, arguing that this would enhance accountability and motivate all parties to serve the people more effectively.

“The unity is good, but it needs to be very fair and straightforward so that everyone can benefit, especially with the emerging oil and gas sector which must serve every Sierra Leonean,” Tunis said. He added that the PR system, if applied equitably, “will stand for all to benefit.”

The remarks come amid intensified efforts by both the SLPP and APC to reinforce national cohesion and ensure inclusive governance as Sierra Leone positions itself for new economic opportunities.
