The National Public Health Agency of Sierra Leone (NPHA-SL) has joined the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency in issuing an early warning advisory, as heavy to moderate rainfall is forecast across the Northern and Western Regions from 19th to 21st August 2025.

According to NPHA-SL, beyond the risks of flooding and displacement, heavy rains also pose serious public health threats. The agency has urged citizens to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their communities.

Recommended health safety steps include avoiding contact with floodwaters, boiling or treating drinking water to prevent cholera and typhoid, keeping children away from open drains, storing food and medicines in dry elevated spaces, protecting crops and livestock, disposing of waste properly, and reporting early symptoms of illness such as fever, diarrhea, or skin infections.

The agency also called on health workers, community leaders, and mobilizers to spread the message in local languages through trusted networks. “Community health is collective strength,” the advisory emphasized.

For disaster-related emergencies, the public is encouraged to contact NDMA’s toll-free line: 1199, available on all networks.
