The Director of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Albert Massaquoi, has in a recent statement, addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding electoral discrepancies following the 2023 elections.

Massaquoi emphasized that while the All People’s Congress (APC) has the right to contest the election results, such challenges must be pursued through the court system, which he confirmed that the APC failed to take into consideration.

Massaquoi clarified that the ECSL has not been formally notified of any contestation regarding the election results, stating, “If they had taken the issue to court, the Electoral Commission Sierra Leone (ECSL) would have known that the election has been contested.

The assertion came amid claims about the ECSL’s role in the alleged mishaps during the 2023 elections.

In response to concerns about electoral irregularities, Massaquoi outlined the mechanisms the ECSL is implementing to prevent future issues.

He acknowledged the importance of engaging with various stakeholders to address electoral lapses in the electoral process.

Internally, a lot of review is ongoing,” he noted, highlighting the commission’s commitment to improving how elections are conducted and how electoral materials are distributed.

Massaquoi also indicated that many of the challenges faced during the elections could be resolved swiftly through administrative measures. “If we encounter problems, they may be administrative, which can be handled by the commission,” he asserted, reinforcing the ECSL’s proactive approach to electoral management.

According to Massaquoi, the ECSL is currently focused on a comprehensive review plan that involves all staff members, aiming to enhance the integrity and efficiency of future elections.
