The nationwide teachers’ strike is still ongoing, as school leaders say the subsidy payments announced by the government have not yet reflected in school bank accounts.
The Secretary General of the Conference of Principals, Mr. Amos Musa Kai, said the strike will continue until the promised funds show up in the schools’ accounts. He explained, “The Minister will say the government has paid, but when schools go to the bank, they find nothing.”
Kai also raised concerns about the amount announced by the government. The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) said it paid SLE 82.5 million to cover subsidies for the second and third terms of the last school year, but during discussions, school leaders were told SLE 110 million was required. He said this discrepancy means either the payment was reduced or some schools were left out.
He also said the union has asked the government to allow this week to confirm that the payment has reflected in school accounts before the strike can be called off.
Some parents have expressed concern over the strike’s ongoing impact on students’ learning, especially as schools face pressure to catch up on lessons missed last year.
Meanwhile, social media posts continue to show many schools remaining closed, with students standing outside locked gates after arriving for classes.
Despite the government’s assurances, school leaders say the strike will continue until payments are confirmed in accounts.
