Authorities in Makeni have expressed concern after one of the newly installed Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras set up to fight crime in the city was stolen by unknown individuals believed to be professional thieves.
The missing camera was located at the busy Koidu/Plaza Junction, an area notorious for criminal activity, including assaults and robberies.
Its theft has sparked outrage among residents and security officials, who had hoped the surveillance project would help deter such crimes.
In addition to the stolen CCTV, reports indicate that several solar lights and batteries installed at the Makeni Government Hospital have also been carted away, further undermining efforts to improve public safety and service delivery in the city.
Police described the act as both “shocking and disappointing,” stressing that the very facilities intended to protect the public are now being targeted by criminals. Investigations are underway, with security agencies vowing to track down those responsible and restore the stolen equipment.
The CCTV initiative, which saw fifteen cameras installed across strategic locations in Makeni, was designed to monitor hotspots and support law enforcement in combating theft and violence. The recent incident, however, has raised questions about how such vital infrastructure can be better protected.
