Staff of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) on Friday apprehended a man accused of stealing cables and transmitters from a transformer in Freetown.

In a video that has been widely circulated online, the suspect, appeared to be in his early thirties, was surrounded by EDSA personnel and irate community members. The neighborhood, whose name was not disclosed, has reportedly been without electricity for several weeks.

“We have made frantic efforts to rectify the issue at this community,” one EDSA staff member said, suggesting that ongoing repair work has been undermined by repeated incidents of theft.

Electricity cable theft has become a recurring challenge for EDSA, costing the authority millions of Leones in repairs and replacements while leaving communities in prolonged darkness. Experts warn that such acts not only disrupt supply but also slow down government efforts to improve energy access across Freetown.

Ultimately, the theft of cables and transformers undermines public trust in the system and deepens the hardships faced by residents who rely on electricity for their daily lives.
