The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has officially opened the portal for subject selection, marking a key milestone in Sierra Leone’s education system.
The launch, which took place quietly on 18th September, signals the start of an important decision-making period for students preparing to shape their academic paths.
English Language and General Mathematics remain the two compulsory subjects for all students. Beyond these, the portal offers a diverse list of 34 optional subjects spanning business, science, arts, and technical disciplines. Options include Business Management Studies, Physics, Christian Religious Studies, Technical Drawing, Shorthand, Engineering Science, Arabic, and Food and Nutrition, among others.
Education officials say the broad range of subjects is designed to provide students with the flexibility to tailor their studies according to personal interests, career ambitions, or parental guidance, while also ensuring a balanced curriculum.
The rollout comes at a time when national discussions around education reform, skills development, and employability are gaining momentum.
Observers note that the new selection portal could play a crucial role in equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate both academic and real-world challenges.
As the portal opens, students across Sierra Leone now face a critical choice not just about what to study, but potentially about the direction of their future.

The inconsistency in the ministry of education under this minister is disturbing the system of education. How can our kids cope with this, in just few months to their exams. If you don’t prepare for something don’t implement it. This has water down the system to the drain.
If this is sustainable it is a great step forward, we need to move to the digital trending, let’s unite and try it and improve or transform our educational system which is expensive but lacks quality.
