More than 75 stakeholders from the South-East region have gathered in Bo for a two-day regional consultation on the draft Data Protection Regulation Commission Bill, organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE).
The opening session featured remarks from local authorities, including Salia Fuhal Sheriff, Assistant Secretary of the Provincial Administration South, and Samuka Kawa, Assistant District Officer of Bo District Administration. Representatives from the Right to Access Information Commission (RAIC) and the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) also addressed participants.
Delivering the keynote address, Hon. Ing. John Abu, Resident Minister South, praised President Julius Maada Bio’s government for prioritizing digital governance. He noted that the bill will strengthen privacy safeguards and help hospitals, schools, the media, and the justice sector handle data more responsibly.
From the security perspective, AIG South, Andrew M. Kamara, stressed that secure data management is vital for protecting citizens and ensuring justice.
National Consultant D.D. Thompson outlined the policy framework in light of Sierra Leone’s rapid technological growth, while International Consultant Paul Okirig provided global and regional perspectives.
Reinforcing government commitment, Permanent Secretary of MoICE Andrew S. Kamara assured that the ministry intends to finalize the bill in 2025, giving Sierra Leone a strong legal framework for data protection.
The consultation continues today with dialogue sessions and stakeholder recommendations.
