The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has officially handed over a newly constructed block of six classrooms to St. Joseph’s Secondary School in Freetown, marking another milestone in Sierra Leone’s Free Quality Education (FQE) programme.

The classrooms, furnished with modern learning equipment, are designed to reduce overcrowding and improve teaching and learning outcomes. The project was implemented by the Free Education Project Secretariat (FEPS), with funding support from the Multi-Donor Trust Fund and oversight from the World Bank.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chief Education Officer, Mr. Edward M. Kpakra, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering high-quality education to every child in Sierra Leone. He emphasized the four pillars of the FQE initiative—universal access, comprehensive safety, radical inclusion, and quality teaching—stressing that these principles ensure education remains equitable and inclusive.

Mr. Kpakra also highlighted the importance of partnerships, thanking the World Bank and other stakeholders for their support. He acknowledged FEPS not only for its work in infrastructure development but also in teacher training, noting that collaboration remains key to addressing the challenges facing the education sector.

The event featured messages of appreciation from school stakeholders. The School Principal and the Chairman of the Board of Governors expressed gratitude for the new facilities and their anticipated impact on student learning. Civil Society representative, Alphonso Manley, Executive Director of the Civil Rights Coalition, urged the school to use the resources responsibly.

The ceremony concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between MBSSE and St. Joseph’s Secondary School to ensure effective management and maintenance of the new classrooms
