Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) is intensifying preparations for the upcoming 2026 National Population and Housing Census, with plans to deploy hundreds of trained field staff nationwide for a comprehensive mapping exercise set to commence on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.
The mapping will cover all administrative levels of the country from regions to districts, chiefdoms, and wards as part of efforts to ensure accurate and reliable data collection when the census officially begins.
Earlier, Stats SL officially launched a ten-day training program on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Cartographic Mapping for Master Trainers. The initiative forms a crucial part of the preparatory phase for the 2026 Decennial Population and Housing Census, designed to equip participants with essential skills for effective cartographic mapping.
Speaking at the event, the Officer-in-Charge of UNFPA Sierra Leone, Ms. Sibeso Mululuma, described the census as a critical statistical undertaking that provides the primary source of information on the country’s population characteristics. She emphasized that GIS and cartographic mapping are essential for producing accurate maps to ensure comprehensive coverage and proper enumeration.
Meanwhile, on Sunday evening, October 5, 2025, Alusine Rehme Wilson, the Northern Regional Publicity Officer for the census, provided updates to thousands of teachers, students, and partners gathered at the Wusum Stadium in Makeni during a friendly football match organized by the Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union (SLTU) Executive to commemorate World Teachers’ Day.
Wilson announced that in the Northern Region, teams would visit Bombali, Tonkolili, Falaba, and Koinadugu Districts as part of a nationwide exercise and that schoolchildren would be engaged in their schools as part of ongoing communication strategies.
He emphasized the importance of community cooperation in the mapping process, describing it as a vital foundation for achieving credible results in the 2026 census. Wilson also encouraged teachers and local leaders to actively support sensitization efforts across the country.
