The Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councilors, and Chief Administrator of the Freetown City Council (FCC) on Tuesday, 21st October 2025, warmly received a delegation from the Mayor’s Migration Council (MMC) at City Hall, Freetown.
The visit marks the beginning of a four-day working engagement between the FCC and the MMC, underscoring a strong and strategic partnership that highlights Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr’s leadership as a founding member of the Mayor’s Migration Council and her role on the MMCC40 Global Mayors Task Force on Climate and Migration.
During the opening session, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr provided insights into the city’s development journey from Transform Freetown (2019–2023) to the ongoing phase, Transform Freetown, Transforming Lives. She reflected on both progress and challenges, particularly the issue of rural-to-urban migration, which continues to drive rapid urbanization, unemployment, and environmental strain in the capital.
The Mayor outlined several major achievements under the Transform Freetown initiative, including:
Freetown the TreeTown Project: Over 1.2 million trees planted across 13 catchment areas, creating green jobs for young people.
Creative Arts Project: Empowering youth to showcase their creativity and fashion talent.
Digitalization of Properties: Enhancing transparency and efficiency in city management.
Formation of 120 Youth Groups: Supporting young entrepreneurs and community-led initiatives.
Installation of Biodigesters: Improving sanitation and promoting sustainable waste management in markets. Following the opening session, the MMC delegation joined FCC technical teams for discussions on sanitation, waste management, urban planning, and youth employment in line with Day 1 of their official agenda.
As the four-day visit continues through Friday, the FCC anticipates deeper collaboration, technical exchanges, and field visits aimed at advancing Freetown’s vision for inclusive and sustainable urban growth.
