The Deputy Leader of Government Business II in Parliament, Hon. Saa Emerson Lamina, has hailed President Julius Maada Bio for what he described as a historic and unmatched commitment to the development of Kono District, particularly in strengthening human capital.
Hon. Lamina made the remarks during the commissioning of the newly constructed Maternal Center of Excellence in Koidu City. The state-of-the-art facility, with a 120-bed capacity, includes a theater capable of serving up to 14 pregnant women simultaneously and a neonatal unit designed to care for 20 premature babies at a time. The Government of Sierra Leone granted a $7 million waiver toward its establishment.
The MP outlined several notable investments made by the Bio-led administration in the district. These include the ongoing construction of a homegrown university in Kono, the first since western education arrived in the region over a century ago, with over $2 million already invested and further funding anticipated from ECOWAS.
He also referenced government support to the CLSG Energy Project, which has significantly improved electricity access across the district; the completion of the Koakor and Yikuma bridges; and the construction of more than 1,200 culverts and feeder roads by local councils. Hon. Lamina expressed optimism for the completion of the Koidu-Guinea Highway, describing it as another critical infrastructure milestone.
On national development, Hon. Lamina praised President Bio for raising the health sector’s share of the national budget to 10%, up from 5% in 2018, and boosting the education budget to 22%, previously 9%. He further acknowledged the rise in women’s representation in Parliament to 30.4%.
“These unprecedented investments cut across region, religion, tribe, and politics,” he stated, adding that the progress achieved under President Bio’s leadership is enhancing quality of life for citizens nationwide.
Hon. Lamina also highlighted government efforts in stabilizing the economy, noting what he described as a more than 25% reduction in the cost of staple food such as rice and an increase in telecommunications access to 97% of the population.
He concluded that the ongoing development gains in Kono and across the country would continue to bolster the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party’s (SLPP) political support going forward.
