Sierra Leone’s former President, Ernest Bai Koroma, was among a gathering of prominent West African figures in Abuja on Thursday, November 20, 2025, attending the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation.

The event, which also marked the 68th birthday of its founder, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, was themed “Legacy of Impact, Celebrating Our Journey.” The high-profile gala dinner drew dignitaries from across the diplomatic and political spheres.

In a statement, the Foundation expressed gratitude to the distinguished guests, specifically acknowledging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima—and “former President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma.”

Koroma’s presence at the event continues his visible engagement in Nigeria’s political and social scene. His attendance comes months after a March 2025 meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa and his participation at the launch of former Nigerian leader Ibrahim Babangida’s book earlier that same month.

The former Sierra Leonean leader has been in Nigeria since January 2024, when a High Court in Sierra Leone granted him permission to travel for medical reasons amid pending legal proceedings related to an alleged coup attempt—charges he has consistently denied.

In a recent audio statement from March 2025, Koroma clarified that his extended stay was a temporary measure, following counsel from regional leaders like Ghana’s former President Nana Akufo-Addo and Senegal’s former President Macky Sall to allow political tensions in Sierra Leone to cool.

The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, which over the past decade has focused on promoting dialogue and strengthening democratic governance across Africa, used the anniversary to call for continued collaboration to build a more peaceful and prosperous continent.
