China has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to improve newborn and child health outcomes in Sierra Leone through a new initiative aimed at reducing preventable child deaths and strengthening the country’s health system.

The project, titled Accelerating Newborn and Child Health in Sierra Leone for Improved Survival and Well-being, is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and is expected to have nationwide impact.

According to project details, the initiative will focus on capacity building and service delivery improvements across the health sector. Nearly 1,000 health workers are to be trained, while over 80 health facilities will be equipped with essential medicines and supported with solar power to improve service reliability, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.

The project will also enhance health data management and referral systems, aimed at improving timely access to care for newborns and children.

Funded by the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund (GDF), the initiative is projected to directly benefit about 400,000 children and reach more than 1.1 million people across the country.

Partners say the intervention reflects a commitment to shared learning, solidarity, and sustained investment in the health and well-being of children in Sierra Leone, as the country continues efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality.
