The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has confirmed that four people died and three others were injured following a pit collapse at a gold mining site in Kono District, eastern Sierra Leone.

In a press release issued by the NDMA, the incident occurred on Thursday, 18 December 2025, at a mining site in the Kumo Community, Nimikoro Chiefdom. According to the agency, the collapse involved a group of miners who were operating illegally at the site.

The NDMA identified the deceased as Abdul Bangura, Fatmata Bangura, Admansay Thullah, and Sampa Kargbo. The agency said the victims, made up of two adult men and two adult women, were all residents of the Kumo Community and were recovered on the day of the incident.

The injured survivors were named as Abdul Koroma, Abass Fullah, and Hawa Fullah. The NDMA stated that the injured, comprising two adult men and one adult woman, were promptly rescued and taken to the Kono Government Hospital in Koidu, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

The agency further said the bodies of the deceased were recovered and handed over to their families for burial. Efforts to identify the owner of the mining site are ongoing.

Following the incident, the NDMA Eastern Region Team was immediately deployed to the area. The agency said it worked jointly with the Office of National Security, the Sierra Leone Police, and community volunteers to support search and recovery operations.

In the interest of public safety, the NDMA ordered the immediate closure of the affected mining site until further notice. The agency also announced that an investigation committee is being set up to examine the circumstances surrounding the pit collapse, adding that appropriate actions will be taken based on the committee’s findings and recommendations.

The NDMA extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a full and speedy recovery. The agency urged strict adherence to mining safety regulations to prevent avoidable loss of life.
