Confusion erupted at the Freetown Port on Sunday morning, December 28, 2025, after members of the Indigenous Transport Owners Association at Water Quay reportedly blocked the Savage Square gate, preventing trailers from Guinea from accessing the port.
According to popular journalist Musa Kamara, Sierra Leone and Guinea have an existing bilateral arrangement that allows containers destined for Guinea to be offloaded at the Freetown Port for onward transshipment. The arrangement was reportedly introduced to ease severe congestion at the Guinea Port.
Members of the Indigenous Transport Owners Association say they initially welcomed the agreement, viewing it as an opportunity to expand their businesses by securing contracts to transport the containers from Freetown to Guinea. However, they claim that despite their expectations, local transporters have not been given the opportunity to benefit from the arrangement.
Instead, the agreement has reportedly led to the influx of hundreds of trailers from Guinea into the Freetown Port to directly collect containers. The association alleges that this has sidelined Sierra Leonean truck drivers, who now struggle daily for parking space and transportation opportunities at the quay.
The situation reportedly escalated after allegations that a particular transport owner had facilitated the entry of hundreds of Guinean trailers into the port. Members of the association claim these trailers are being given priority access to parking space and transportation operations, further marginalising local drivers.
In protest, the aggrieved transport owners blocked the Savage Square gate, effectively denying Guinean trailers entry into the port and disrupting operations at the quay.
