Many communities in central Freetown are currently suffering from power outages as the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has announced major repairs across on major distribution networks in the capital.

In an official public notice issued on January 17, 2026, EDSA informed the general public that the faults have disrupted electricity supply to several residential and commercial areas, causing inconvenience to households, businesses, students, and essential service providers.

The affected communities include:
Priscilla Street and its surrounding areas
Fourah Bay Road (Eastern section)
Soldier Street and surrounding communities
Afro Plastic and SOO Pure communities
Smithley Local
Banga Farm (California LV Feeder)
Sussex Feeder areas
Allen Town Local
Bathurst Village Local

According to EDSA, its technical engineers have already identified the specific faults responsible for the outages, and repair works are currently ongoing in all the affected locations. The authority has assured residents that every effort is being made to restore normal power supply on or before Sunday, January 19, 2026.

The prolonged outage has already begun to impact daily life in some of the affected areas, with residents reporting disruptions to small businesses, mobile phone charging services, cold storage for food and medicine, and general household activities. Some students have also expressed concern over limited access to electricity for evening studies, while business owners worry about potential financial losses.

EDSA acknowledged the hardship caused by the blackout and issued a formal apology to customers.

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused. We appreciate your patience as we work to restore electricity supply within the affected communities,” the statement read.

The authority further reaffirmed its commitment to improving service delivery and strengthening the stability of the national power distribution network. EDSA encouraged customers to remain calm and allow engineers the necessary time and space to complete the repair works safely and effectively.

Members of the public have also been advised to report any dangerous electrical situations, such as fallen cables or sparking transformers, to EDSA offices to prevent accidents during the restoration process.

As residents await the full restoration of power, many are hopeful that the ongoing repairs will not only resolve the current faults but also lead to more reliable electricity supply across Freetown in the coming weeks.
