The National Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPD) has launched the second phase of its nationwide regional tour in the North-West Region, aimed at strengthening collaboration with key stakeholders and advancing disability inclusion across the country.

The delegation, led by the Chairman and Chief Commissioner, Commissioner Brima Abdulai Sheriff, includes the Acting Executive Secretary, the Director of Religious and Social Affairs at the Ministry of Social Welfare, John Conteh, and the Commission’s Information, Communication and Outreach Officer.

The regional tour follows the South-East engagement conducted last year and seeks to promote inclusive, equitable, and accessible services for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in line with the Commission’s mandate.

The tour began in Lungi, with a courtesy visit to the Paramount Chief of Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom, PC Bai Shebora Sheba Gbereh III, where Commissioner Sheriff underscored the importance of traditional leadership in advancing disability rights and inclusion.

The Paramount Chief expressed his chiefdom’s commitment to working with the NCPD to ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy their rights and participate meaningfully in community development.

At the Port Loko District Council sub-office, Commissioner Sheriff outlined the Commission’s PRIDE vision Policy, Resilience, Inclusion, Dignity, and Empowerment, and emphasized the role of local councils in enforcing provisions of the Persons with Disability Act. District Council officials reaffirmed their willingness to collaborate with the Commission in rights promotion and monitoring.

The delegation also engaged officers at the Lungi Police Division Headquarters, focusing on rights-based approaches in the handling of persons with disabilities, particularly access to justice, reasonable accommodation, and inclusive communication. Police leadership is committed to improving disability-sensitive policing practices.

At the Lungi Government Hospital, discussions centered on health-care obligations under Part V, Section 17 of the Persons with Disability Act, including the provision of free health care for persons with disabilities. Hospital management assured the Commission of their readiness to strengthen compliance, with particular attention to pregnant women with disabilities.

The first day of the tour concluded with a meeting at WESOFOD–Port Loko, where members shared challenges and expectations regarding disability inclusion in the district. Commissioner Sheriff reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to listening to stakeholders and advocating for the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities nationwide.
