Mr. Abdul Aziz, the Auditor General of Sierra Leone, has been appointed to the Governing Council of the African Professionalisation Initiative (API), a move expected to bolster the country’s standing in continental public financial management.

Mr. Aziz was nominated to the council by the African Organisation of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E) to serve as its official representative. The appointment was formalized in a letter dated January 27, 2026.

The API is an independent non-profit organization focused on enhancing the expertise of accounting and auditing professionals within the African public sector. It operates as a strategic partnership between the accountancy profession and the various regional branches of the African Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI).

In a congratulatory message, API Chief Executive Officer Evans Mulera stated that the nomination of Mr. Aziz represents a “significant step forward” in fostering continental collaboration. Mulera cited the Auditor General’s “proven expertise, network, and deep understanding of public financial management” as the primary reasons for his selection.

Within the Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL), the appointment is being viewed as a recognition of the country’s recent contributions to international auditing standards. Officials suggest the move reflects Mr. Aziz’s work in advancing transparency and accountability frameworks both locally and abroad.

The appointment is expected to provide Sierra Leone with a direct voice in shaping the policies that govern public sector professionalization across Africa. Analysts believe this integration into the API Governing Council will further align Sierra Leone’s public financial management practices with global best practices, supporting broader goals of good governance and effective service delivery.
