Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has announced a bold 300-day period of activism aimed at accelerating delivery of critical health services, with a particular focus on reducing maternal mortality.
The initiative was unveiled on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, where President Bio also called on African leaders and development partners to join Sierra Leone in this urgent effort.
Addressing delegates, President Bio emphasized that the campaign is a focused, time-bound push to strengthen maternal health interventions, particularly in areas where progress has been slow. “Too many maternal deaths continue to occur because known solutions are not applied consistently,” he said, highlighting the need for discipline, accountability, and sustained political commitment.
The 300-day initiative, set to begin on 1st March 2026, will prioritize:
Continuous care for pregnant women throughout pregnancy
Promotion of safe deliveries
Rapid response to complications
Comprehensive postnatal follow-up
President Bio underscored that maternal mortality is not reduced by statements alone, but through effective daily decisions, robust systems, and measurable results. “Progress will be closely monitored, openly reported, and judged by the number of lives saved,” he added.
The Sierra Leonean leader’s call to action comes amid a renewed push across Africa to improve maternal and child health outcomes, positioning Sierra Leone as a regional example of political will translating into actionable results. By inviting fellow African leaders and partners to join the initiative, President Bio seeks to foster collaboration and shared accountability in saving lives.
