The National Water Resources Management Agency (NWRMA) and the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA) have taken a significant step toward strengthening water governance and maritime safety in Sierra Leone following a high-level engagement aimed at fostering strategic collaboration.

The meeting focused on promoting sustainable water resource management through improved coordination of vessel regulation, monitoring, and protection of both inland and marine water bodies.

Officials from both institutions acknowledged the shared responsibility of safeguarding the country’s water resources from pollution and environmental degradation.

Speaking during the engagement, the Director of Legal, Regulations and Outreach at NWRMA, Abu Bakarr Iscandri Conteh Esq., underscored the importance of collaboration, noting that although both institutions have different statutory mandates, they operate within the same environmental space, the nation’s water resources.

He emphasized that effective implementation of their mandates can only be achieved through structured institutional partnerships.

On behalf of SLMA, Deputy Executive Director Emmanuel B. A. Lansana Ing. reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to working closely with partner institutions to achieve national development objectives, particularly in the sustainable management of maritime and water resources.

The engagement concluded with a shared commitment to deepen cooperation, strengthen regulatory enforcement, and promote integrated water and maritime management frameworks.

The collaboration is expected to enhance environmental protection efforts and ensure that Sierra Leone’s water resources remain safe, productive, and sustainable for future generations.
