The Sierra Leonean legal community is mourning the death of Berthan Macauley Jr. Esq., a senior barrister and prominent private legal practitioner who passed away recently in Senegal.

Macauley was a central figure in the country’s justice sector, known for his expertise in high-profile constitutional litigation. Throughout his career, he frequently appeared before the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone, notably serving as lead counsel in landmark cases that influenced national jurisprudence and governance.

Born into a distinguished legal family, Macauley was the son of the late Berthan Macauley Sr. Esq. and the late Agnes Awunor Renner Esq., a former Chief Justice of Sierra Leone. Colleagues and peers have recognized him as a practitioner who built upon this family legacy through a disciplined and independent professional career.

In a statement issued following the news, opposition politician and 2023 APC presidential candidate Samura Kamara described Macauley as a “titan of the bar” and a “beacon of integrity.”

“Sierra Leone has lost another distinguished son of the soil—a lawyer of discipline, intellect, and integrity,” Kamara stated. “He recognized that the practice of law is not simply about argument or procedure, but about safeguarding fairness and defending rights.”

Macauley’s colleagues within the Sierra Leone Bar Association have characterized his passing as a significant loss to the nation’s legal landscape, citing his commitment to the rule of law and his role in shaping national debates on constitutional interpretation.

Formal tributes from the legal fraternity and various national institutions are expected to continue in the coming days as funeral arrangements are finalized.
