The Sierra Leone passport has climbed six positions in the February 2026 Henley Global Passport Index, now ranking 70th globally. This represents a notable improvement from its 76th position in 2025.
The index, compiled by Henley & Partners, is an authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The index includes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations.
According to the latest 2026 data, the Sierra Leone passport currently grants visa-free access to 62 destinations worldwide.
Globally, Singapore boasts the most powerful passport, allowing entry to 192 countries. It is followed closely by Japan and South Korea, which share the second spot with access to 187 destinations. Sweden and the United Arab Emirates share the 3rd position with visa-free access to 186 countries.
Within Africa, Seychelles holds the top spot, ranking 23rd globally with visa-free access to 155 countries. Mauritius’s passport is ranked second in Africa and 26th globally. South Africa ranks third in Africa and 47th in the world, with access to travel to 100 countries. Botswana is ranked fourth in Africa and rated 56th globally.
Sierra Leone holds a competitive position among African nations, ranking 5th within West Africa and surpassing several neighbours, including Liberia, which is 14th overall. The top-ranked West African countries are Ghana, Cape Verde, Gambia, and Benin, with Sierra Leone following closely behind them in the fifth spot.
Countries with some of the least powerful passports in Africa continue to include South Sudan , Sudan , Nigeria , Libya , Eritrea , and Somalia.
