Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on gender equality, women’s empowerment and the protection of the rights of women and girls.

The commitment was reinforced during an engagement involving Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, UN Women Sierra Leone and the DRC’s Minister of Gender, Family and Children’s Affairs.

The engagement provided an opportunity for both countries to explore ways of strengthening bilateral relations and advancing shared priorities aimed at creating greater opportunities for women and girls.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs reaffirmed the country’s commitment to gender equality and highlighted progress, experiences and key interventions undertaken to promote women’s participation, inclusion and empowerment.

She said Sierra Leone is prepared to deepen cooperation with the DRC and other African countries by sharing experiences, lessons and best practices that could help accelerate meaningful and sustainable progress on gender equality across the continent.

The discussions also focused on the importance of stronger partnerships, knowledge exchange and collective action in addressing persistent gender inequalities and creating an enabling environment in which women and girls can participate fully in society, access opportunities and take on leadership roles.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing women’s rights, inclusion and empowerment while strengthening regional cooperation on gender-related issues.

The engagement highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration among African countries and development partners in addressing barriers affecting women and girls and ensuring that gender equality remains central to national and regional development efforts.

The renewed cooperation is expected to provide opportunities for greater knowledge sharing and collaboration between Sierra Leone and the DRC as both countries continue efforts to promote the rights, participation and empowerment of women and girls.
