The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Foundation has officially announced the commencement of the 5th edition of its prestigious National Essay Competition.
This year’s launch is held in strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education (MBSSE) and the Institute for Legal Research and Advocacy for Justice (ILRAJ).
The competition is designed as a premier platform for students to sharpen their critical thinking skills and showcase their literary talents. By inviting youth to engage with complex social issues, the UBA Foundation aims to amplify student voices across the country.

“The goal is to provide a space where students feel encouraged to express their ideas and demonstrate their potential,” a spokesperson noted during the launch.
In a timely response to pressing social challenges, the foundation has selected a poignant and vital topic for this year’s submissions:
“Gender-Based Violence in Schools: Causes, Consequences, and Solutions.”
Participants are expected to provide in-depth analysis and innovative recommendations on how to create safer learning environments for all students in Sierra Leone.

The competition is open exclusively to Senior Secondary School students nationwide. Beyond the prestige of winning, the foundation has announced a significant prize pool to support the educational journey of the victors:
Top Prizes: Cash rewards ranging from Le20,000 to Le50,000.
Winners will also receive laptops and high-quality educational materials to further their studies.

The collaboration with the Ministry of Education and legal advocacy groups ensures that the competition remains a cornerstone of the national academic calendar, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world advocacy.
