The Government of Sierra Leone has officially handed over the rehabilitation of the Kenema-Zimmi Road to a contractor, marking a significant step in efforts to improve road infrastructure in the eastern and southern regions of the country.
According to government authorities, the project is being implemented through the Sierra Leone Roads Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Works and Public Assets and the Road Maintenance Fund Administration.
The road, which stretches for approximately 87 kilometres, connects the city of Kenema in Kenema District to Zimmi in Pujehun District. It is widely regarded as a vital route linking communities and facilitating movement across the south-eastern part of Sierra Leone.
Government officials said the route also serves as an important corridor for the transportation of goods, farm produce and passengers between districts, making it essential to economic and social activities in the region.
Authorities noted that the rehabilitation project forms part of the government’s broader national efforts to strengthen transportation infrastructure, stimulate economic growth and improve regional connectivity.
Once completed, the improved road is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Kenema and Zimmi, while also facilitating the transportation of agricultural produce from rural farming communities to markets across the region. Officials say the development will further promote cross-district trade and support economic activities in the south-eastern corridor.
Government representatives also indicated that the project will create employment opportunities for local residents during the construction phase, providing short-term jobs for communities along the road corridor.
Residents and stakeholders in the affected districts have for years called for the rehabilitation of the Kenema–Zimmi Road due to its deteriorating condition. The poor state of the road has often caused transportation difficulties and increased travel risks for motorists, commercial drivers and commuters.
In response to these concerns, government authorities have assured the public that the rehabilitation works will address longstanding challenges and significantly improve accessibility for communities along the route.
The start of the project is widely viewed as a major boost for development in the eastern and southern regions of Sierra Leone, particularly for communities that rely heavily on the road for agriculture, trade and mobility. Officials say the initiative reflects the government’s continued commitment to improving infrastructure and expanding economic opportunities across the country.

We hope and pray that this project would be a successful one. It will be a milestone development for the southeast region and even the country at large 🙏
