The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Youssouf Ali, has praised the Governments of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone for choosing peaceful and diplomatic means to resolve ongoing border tensions among the three West African nations.
In a press release issued on 18 March 2026 from AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Chairperson welcomed the High-level Tripartite Summit convened on 16 March 2026 in Conakry by the Heads of State of the three Mano River Union (MRU) countries. The summit focused on strengthening border cooperation and promoting stability within the MRU framework.
The Chairperson commended the collective decision to pursue dialogue and peaceful resolution, noting that it aligns with African Union normative frameworks, including the Constitutive Act of the African Union (2000) and the AU Non-Aggression and Common Defence Pact (2009).
“The spirit of cooperation, good neighbourliness, and respect for shared regional stability demonstrated by the three African Union Member States led to this significant achievement,” the statement read. “This milestone underscores the enduring value of African-led solutions to African challenges and reaffirms the principles of peaceful settlement of disputes among Member States.”
The AU Chairperson also recognised the constructive role played by ECOWAS and international partners whose contributions supported the outcome. The peaceful settlement was described as “a model for conflict prevention and resolution across the continent” that strengthens foundations for sustainable peace, security, and development in the Mano River region.
Additionally, the Chairperson applauded the decision by the three leaders to convene a summit of the Mano River Union within the next month to revitalise the organisation and enhance regular dialogue on peace, security, and development.
The African Union reiterated its continued support to the governments and peoples of the three countries in consolidating this progress and advancing regional peace and security.
