The Catholic Diocese of Makeni has extended warm greetings to Muslim faithful in Makeni City and across Sierra Leone on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, describing the end of Ramadan as a moment of reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to peace and solidarity.
In a goodwill message issued by the Bishop’s Office, the Diocese congratulated Muslims for successfully completing the holy month of Ramadan, which is marked by fasting, prayer, almsgiving, and devotion.
“Grace and peace be with you on this joyous day of Eid al-Fitr,” the message stated. “As the Holy Month of Ramadan draws to a close, the Muslim faithful rejoice in the completion of a period marked by fasting, prayer, almsgiving and sincere devotion. It is with a heart full of gratitude and respect that I extend warmest congratulations and heartfelt prayers for a blessed celebration.”
The Diocese noted that the Catholic Church, guided by the spirit of Nostra Aetate the Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions recognises the shared human pursuit of truth, goodness, and dignity across faith traditions.
It further emphasized that the Church “rejects all forms of discrimination” and advocates for the promotion of peace, justice, and human dignity, adding that Eid al-Fitr serves as a powerful reminder of humanity’s shared values of renewal, gratitude, and care for the vulnerable.
The message also highlighted spiritual parallels between Ramadan and the Christian Lenten season, noting that both periods encourage fasting, prayer, repentance, and acts of charity.
“Your observance of fasting teaches discipline of the body and soul; your prayers lift the hearts of families and communities toward the Divine; your acts of almsgiving embody compassion,” the Diocese stated, adding that these virtues align closely with the Christian call to love God and love one’s neighbour.
The Diocese of Makeni reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening interfaith cooperation and social cohesion, calling on religious communities to work together in promoting truthfulness, justice, humility, and generosity.
It further encouraged joint efforts to protect vulnerable groups and foster environments where people of different faiths can live together in mutual respect and understanding.
Concluding its message, the Diocese prayed for continued peace and prosperity, saying: “May the light of this Eid al-Fitr illuminate your homes with peace, may your families be blessed with health and prosperity, and may the spirit of generosity that characterized this holy month continue to inspire acts of kindness throughout the year.”
