Sierra Leone has been placed 146th out of 147 countries in the latest World Happiness Report 2026, positioning the country just above Afghanistan, which ranks last.

According to the report, Sierra Leone recorded a life evaluation score of 3.251 out of 10, reflecting low levels of overall life satisfaction among respondents surveyed between 2023 and 2025.

The findings were released by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford in collaboration with Gallup. The annual study assesses global wellbeing using data from the Gallup World Poll, where participants rate their quality of life on a scale from 0 to 10.

In the 2026 ranking, Malawi placed 145th, while Afghanistan remained at the bottom of the table with a score of 1.446.

At the opposite end of the scale, Finland was once again named the world’s happiest country for the ninth consecutive year, achieving a score of 7.764. Other Nordic countries also featured prominently in the top rankings, alongside Costa Rica, which secured fourth place globally.

The report, produced under the guidance of the University of Oxford and data support from Gallup, evaluates national happiness based on six key indicators: income levels, social support, healthy life expectancy, personal freedom, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. This year’s edition also places emphasis on how social media usage is influencing the wellbeing of young people worldwide.
